Most people know Erin Brockovich as a Hollywood film—a gripping story of a legal assistant who uncovered toxic contamination in a small town’s water supply. But the real Erin Brockovich is still fighting today. And unfortunately, the battle for safe water is far from over.
We’re still seeing communities across the U.S. getting sick from what comes out of their taps. This time, it’s Legionnaires’ disease, a severe and potentially deadly form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with legionella bacteria. The bacteria thrive in poorly maintained plumbing systems—inside homes, hospitals, apartment buildings, hotels, even public housing.
You don’t have to drink the water to get sick. You just have to shower in it.
This is personal for too many families. And it’s preventable.
Safe Water Shouldn’t Be a Hollywood Plotline
In New Jersey, years of rising cases finally led to action. After identifying systemic failures in the Trenton Water Works system, lawmakers passed one of the most comprehensive pieces of legislation in the country. It requires testing not just during outbreaks, but for all reported cases. It creates a public database of where the disease is appearing. And most importantly, it tackles the real source: the water.
As Brockovich wrote in a recent column for The Trentonian, “Protecting the public and preventing the spread of LD is an attainable and realistic goal. We just need forward thinking leaders who will make it happen like New Jersey has.” Read the full piece here.
Meanwhile, states like New York—where Legionnaires’ cases are higher than anywhere else in the country—continue to focus on building equipment and private testing instead of what’s flowing through the pipes.
That’s not good enough.
When companies, landlords, or agencies fail to protect the public, they need to be held accountable. You shouldn’t have to wonder if your water is safe. You shouldn’t have to fight this alone.
