Orlando L.A. Fitness: The Florida Department of Health Investigation
Investigators from The Florida Department of Health visited the Orange Blossom Trail and Kirkman Road locations late last week to inspect the gym facilities. While results won’t be available for a couple of weeks, according to reports:
conditions were favorable for the bacteria… [and] showers and the spas at both locations were in need of treatment with a hydrochlorinated solution
According to the Orlando Sentinel:
LA Fitness sent notices to customers at the two facilities last week, warning them to watch out for any signs of Legionnaires’ disease.
Contracting Legionniares’ At The Gym
Legionnaires’ disease is produced by the Legionella bacteria. Warm, moist environments like a gym can be hospitable for the bacteria’s growth, especially when not properly disinfected on a regular basis. Additionally all water sources need to be tested for the presence of the bacteria. The potential for Legionnaires’ infection can stem from any number of water sources within the gym, including the pool, hot tub, shower, water fountain or any other water source.
